INTERESTED IN AUDITIONING FOR A DWS COMPANY?
Dance Workshops company auditions are held every June. We welcome existing Dance Workshop students as well as outside dancers to join us for an open call. If selected, all dancers are required to attend our annual dance intensive at the end of August. Dancers will train in tap, jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, hip hop, musical theatre and acro. All dancers auditioning must attend all classes from Monday to Friday. At the end of the week placement will be determined. Want to join us? Save the date. Dance Workshop Company members compete twice a year in group dances as well as solo, duos, trios. Our dancers perform at the Barclays Center for the Brooklyn Nets at halftime, for the New York Islanders in the Great Hall pregame and in our local community for the Annual Lynbrook Tree & Menorah Lighting. We strive to curate a wide variety of experiences for our Company dancers. We hope you will join us for many unforgettable moments as a Dance Workshop Company dancer!
DANCE STYLES & DRESS CODE
Tap is a dance in which the rhythm or rhythmical variation is audibly tapped out with the toe or heel by a dancer wearing shoes with special hard soles with taps. Dress Code: black leotard, pink or beige tights, black tap shoes, hair in ponytail or bun, black shorts optional.
Jazz dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Jazz also has its own movement vocabulary ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms. Jazz dance can take on many different characteristics and styles, including Street Jazz, Percussive, Broadway, Contemporary and Lyrical. Dress Code: black leotard, pink or beige tights, beige jazz shoes, hair in ponytail or bun, black shorts optional.
Ballet is a classical dance form demanding grace and precision and employing formalized steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement. Dress Code for 2-7 year olds: leotard, tights, tutu, skirt, pink ballet slippers. Dress Code for all other ages: black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in bun.
Modern is an expressive style of dance developed in early 1900s as a reaction to the formality of ballet. Dress Code: black leotard, footless tights, black shorts optional.
Lyrical is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz. Lyrical dancing is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements to express strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics in the chosen song. Dress Code: black leotard, footless tights, black shorts optional.
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Dress Code: black leotard, footless tights, black shorts optional.
Pointe is the act of standing on the tips of the toes while performing ballet steps. Also known as pointe work, it is performed using hard–toed and stiff-shanked pointe shoes. Dancing on pointe requires strength and skill. Dancers must take two ballet classes a week and receive permission to go up. Dress Code: black leotard, pink tights, pink pointe shoes, hair in bun.
Musical Theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Dress Code: black leotard, pink or beige tights, beige jazz shoes, hair in ponytail or bun, black shorts optional.
Hip Hop refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles including breaking, locking, popping and much more. Dress Code: leggings, sweatpants, shorts, tank top, t-shirt, sneakers.
Acro is a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. Dress Code: fitted tank top, sports bra, shorts, bare feet.
Kickline is a preparatory class for learning specific dance team styles such as pom, kick, and dance. In this class, dancers will focus on picking up quick, sharp, and precise movements in unison with their fellow dancers. Dancers will also focus on jazz technique and flexibility. Dress Code: black leotard, pink or beige tights, beige jazz shoes, hair in ponytail or bun, black shorts optional.
